In April 2008, Commercial Door & Hardware, Inc (CDH) was asked to assist with the design and supply for renovations on the Memorial Union at Arizona State University. CDH worked in concert with Studio Ma, Core Construction and the manufacturers’ to help create a design that would satisfy the owners requirements and meet an aggressive critical schedule. The door & hardware package was estimated at approximately $800,000. The project had to be completed within four months, start to finish, in time for the start of the ASU school year in August.

The project had a variety of design complexities and posed numerous scheduling challenges. We were tasked with delivering custom hollow metal within two weeks of being released to start the project.

The doors were custom AA face maple and FSC/Leed certified. In addition, the majority were STC 45 sound doors with a custom stain. The installation was especially challenging. We were allotted less than four weeks to complete installation of the doors and finish hardware. Because meeting the deadline meant all trades working simultaneously to complete their work, we needed to protect our work from trade damage as well.

The job was completed on time to the owners’ satisfaction. This was a very high profile project; the Board of Regents and Alumni Association routinely meet in the Memorial Union facility.

This beautiful facility is truly a showcase for all the trades involved in the project.
